Description
Condition as seen.Karl Sendler, a member of the team that pioneered space rocketry, died Thursday. He was 86.
Sendler's career began as part of the Werner Von Braun Rocket Team that revolutionized the space industry. Using technology developed during World War II, the team helped to develop the Redstone rocket that carried Alan Shepard into the first manned space flight.
In a 1986 Sentinel story, Sendler recalled Shepard's courage for going onto to "that firecracker" that relied on "unsophisticated equipment." He also recalled the admiration of team members for Shepherd.
Born in Vienna, Austria, Sendler graduated from the University of Vienna with a master's degree in electrical engineering.
Sendler came to the United States after World War II along with the other members of Werner von Braun's team and began working in Huntsville, Ala., testing rockets for the space program. He came to the Cape in 1963.
He was regarded by many as leader in the field of instrumentation. The Measuring and Tracking Office -- of which he was in charge -- was responsible for gathering and tracking information from any rocket or satellite flight.
Under Sendler's guidance, a central tracking facility was created on Merritt Island.
Sendler also served as the director of information services for NASA until his retirement in 1974.
