JOHN GLENN AUTOGRAPH on Cover from U.S.S. Noa
Recovery Ship for Mercury Space Capsule Friendship 7
    JOHN GLENN AUTOGRAPH.
Unique cover (envelope) has a bold signature of John Glenn in blue ink on the center of the face. The cachet at left reads, "U.S.S. Noa, DD-841 / Recovery Ship for the First / U.S. Man in Space." On the right side is the 4¢ Project Mercury stamp, Scott 1193, with a cancel from the U.S.S. Noa dated Feb 23, 1962, three days after the actual recovery. Below it is a facsimile autograph of John Glenn. At the bottom, the text reads, "This commemorative cover was a part of the first mail dispatch from the Destroyer U.S.S. Noa following recovery of U.S. astronaut Lt. Col. John H. Glenn, Jr., USMC, and Mercury space capsule "Friendship Seven."
On Feb. 20, 1962, astronaut John H. Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth during the three-orbit Mercury-Atlas 6 mission, aboard the spacecraft he named Friendship 7. Friendship 7 splashed down at 2:43 p.m. EST about 800 miles southeast of Cape Canaveral in the vicinity of Grand Turk Island in the Turks and Caicos Islands, after a flight lasting 4 hours, 55 minutes, and 23 seconds. The U.S. Navy had designated the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Randolph (CVS-15) as the prime recovery ship, but because Friendship 7 landed 41 miles west and 19 miles north of the planned splashdown target, the closest vessel, the destroyer U.S.S. Noa (DD-841), completed the retrieval from the water.
    John Glenn died
    December 8, 2016.
