Young remains the only person in history to have piloted four different types of spacecraft, along with the Lunar Rover. He flew two Gemini missions, two Apollo missions (including a moon landing on Apollo 16), and two Space Shuttle missions (including the maiden flight of
Columbia
, which remains the only manned test flight of a spacecraft in human history).
This photo was signed near the end of his legendary career, and in the portrait, Young can be seen wearing some of the most significant patches from his career.
