SPACE SHUTTLE COLUMBIA - STS - 4 CREW - AUTOGRAPHED INSCRIBED PHOTOGRAPH CO-SIGNED BY: COLONEL HENRY "HANK" HARTSFIELD JR., REAR ADMIRAL KEN MATTINGLY II - HFSID 295841
STS-4 CREW: HANK HARTSFIELD and KEN MATTINGLY
The two crew members are shown in space suits, in front of an image of the shuttle lifting off.
    Photograph inscribed and signed:
    "To/Bob Glass/With Best Wishes/Hank Hartsfield", "Ken Mattingly".
Color, 8x10. Official NASA photo, shown in spacesuits against a backdrop image of a shuttle lifting off. The fourth orbital flight of
    Columbia
, the first functioning craft in the US space shuttle fleet, This mission (STS-4), lasting from June 27 to July 4, 1982, was the last R&D flight of the shuttle, after which NASA declared the spacecraft operational.
Ken Mattingly was the Mission Commander, Hank Hartsfield the pilot.
STS-4 carried 9 science experiments, and deployed a classified US Air Force payload.
The space shuttle would remain America's principal space vehicle, the only one with a human crew, until the shuttle fleet was retired in 2012.
    Astronaut
    THOMAS K. "KEN" MATTINGLY
's exposure to measles resulted in his being replaced on the April 11, 1970
    Apollo 13
manned lunar landing mission. When the mission was aborted due to loss of pressure in liquid oxygen in the service module and fuel cell failure, Mattingly (b. 1936)
manned the command module simulator to discover a re-entry procedure
feasible with the vehicle's very limited energy reserves. During the
    Apollo 16
manned lunar landing mission (April 16-27, 1972), he
    orbited the Moon
    in the
    Casper
Command Module while Charles Duke and John Young descended in the Lunar Module,
    Orion
    . Mattingly
later served on the crews of the
    June 27-July 4, 1982
    Columbia
    and the January 24-28, 1985
    Discovery
    space shuttles
    .
    HENRY "HANK" HARTSFIELD (1933-2014)
was a US Air Force fighter and test pilot before joining the astronaut corps in 1969. A member of the support crew for Apollo 16 and three Skylab missions, he was also part of the orbital flight test mission team, as shown here.
He later went into space three times on the Space Shuttle, once as pilot (STS4, 1982) and twice as spacecraft commander (STS41-D, 1984; STS61-A, 1985)
. After retiring as an astronaut, he continued his work for NASA, most recently on the International Space Station program. Edges toned. Printed caption on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
